After a great deal of time, money and effort spent preparing for Super DIRT Week, Jessica Power and her team have come away from the festivities with a top 15 finish and some valuable experience that will help when they return next year.
With more the 60 cars battling for only 30 starting spots in the premiere Sportsman event of the season, finishing in the top 15 is a great accomplishment for anyone, let alone a team making their first appearance at the track. Syracuse is unlike any other track, being a full mile in length and speeds a lot higher then a normal short track.
Jessica struggled early in practice on Thursday, trying to find more speed throughout the session. The car was a little better on Friday in time trials, as she posted the 34th fastest speed out of the 61 cars that made an attempt. The Futures race was up next on Friday afternoon, giving first time racers at Syracuse some added track time. Jessica finished her race in 11th place in her race that featured two groups of 18 cars in each one.
Although she still had to race her way into the show, Power was optimistic going into the last chance qualifier on Saturday. However, with rain falling early on Saturday morning, track officials had to make some changes to the schedule, and the last chance qualifying race was cancelled. Power would make the race using a provisional starting spot that she earned by being in the top 12 in DIRTcar Sportsman Series points and was scheduled to start the 30 lap championship race from the rear of the field. Ultimately, the race ended up getting postponed until Sunday. When the race finally got underway, Power drove a great race, moving steadily up the leaderboard. She battled lap after lap, and ended with a solid 15th place finish.
“We are extremely happy with how our week went”, says Power. “We got better and better each time we were on the track. “This was our first time here, and we learned a lot. I can’t wait to come back here next year”.
This coming weekend will be the season finale for the Power Racing team. They will be on the track on Sunday, October 14th for the final DIRTcar Sportsman Series race of 2012 as part of the 1000 Islands RV DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals Weekend.
