It was a busy weekend of racing
for Jessica Power and the Power Racing team, with three events on tap,
beginning with Mohawk Raceway on Friday night, then on to Brockville Speedway
on Saturday and ending with the season opening events at Cornwall Motor
Speedway.
It was a struggle early at
Mohawk Raceway on Friday night. A fifth
place finish in the preliminary heats put her back in 21st to start
the 20 lap Sportsman main event. The
first half of the race continued to be frustrating for Power, unable to gain
much ground. As the race approached
halfway, Power was a long way back in 19th place. The second half of the race was a different
story, as the car roared to life. With
five laps remaining, she was in the top 15, and continued to pass a car a lap
until the finish, getting up to 10th.
“We really struggled early in
the race, but I changed my line after halfway and really found something”, says
Power. “It is too bad the race wasn’t a
few laps longer, and I think we would have moved up even more”.
At Brockville on Saturday,
Power had a strong second place finish in her qualifying heat race. In the 25 lap main event, she would start
from outside of the fourth row in eighth place, and battled an ill-handling car
for much of the race, she would finish the event in 11th, but later
determined the cause of the handling issues.
“The car didn’t want to work
well at all, and once we got back to the pits after the race we discovered that
we had a bent shock and the torsion bars had went away on us”, says Power. “We still managed to salvage an ok finish,
and we will be back next week looking for better results”.
The final stop of the weekend
was Cornwall Speedway, and Power struggled early in practice. After making some changes to the car, she
had improved some, taking home a sixth place finish in her heat race. In the 20 lap main event, she would start
from the 15th position but this time the car was working well. In just five laps she was into the top ten,
and into the top five as the race approached lap 13. Power would go on to finish fourth, posting her best run of the
2012 season to date.
