It only takes a quick glance at
the point standings to realize that Jessica Power is one of the most improved
Sportsman teams in this area. They have
worked hard over the off-season on their program, and did some early season
testing under race conditions at tracks that she is unfamiliar with. The hard work is paying off as she has
posted strong finishes throughout the early part of the 2012 season. Power had a pair of events scheduled this
weekend with her usual visits to Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway on
Friday and Saturday night, and later added Sunday’s race at Cornwall to their
schedule.
At Mohawk on Friday night,
Power began the night with a fourth place finish in her qualifying heat. She had started on the outside of the front
row, but struggled early. The team made
several adjustments on the car before hitting the track for the 20 lap
feature. Power ran a great race,
advancing to third place early, and holding that spot through halfway. In the final laps, Power had slipped back to
fifth, but still a solid performance.
The next stop on the weekend schedule
was Brockville Ontario Speedway.
Power. She finished her
preliminary qualifying event from fifth place, and reported to the pits for
adjustment in hopes of getting the car dialed in for the upcoming 25 lap main
event. Power would start from the 11th
position, but a flat tire on lap 2 sent her to the pits. She returned to the track, and was able to
get back on the lead lap under the next caution. From that point forward, Power worked her way through the field
with one of her best performances of the season. She battled her way back to record a fifth place finish.
“It really looked like it was
going to be a bad night when we cut down that right front tire with just two
laps in”, says Power after the race.
“Fortunately we were able to get back out there, and get our lap back
and race our way up to fifth. It was a
real good run for us”.
With the two successful starts
already on the weekend, and the DIRTcar Sportsman Series looming next week at
Cornwall, Power decided to head back to Cornwall to get more experience at the
track. Once again, Power struggled in
the opening heat race, and the team made some adjustments before the
feature. She started from deep in the field
in 17th place, but again moved through the field. At the end of the 20 lap event, she had
moved up to 10th.
