The 2012 racing season has been very good for Jessica Power and the Power Racing team. There is no doubt that she has emerged as a top tier driver in the Sportsman division, and is certainly the most improved driver in this area in her division. Power sits in the top five in points at both weekly tracks, and has been a consistent top ten, and often top five finisher all season long. Power continued her strong season this past weekend with the usual weekly events at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, and Brockville Speedway on Saturday.
At Mohawk Raceway, a total of 39 Sportsman entries were on hand for a special 40 lap St. Lawrence Seaway Series race. Power finished 11th in the first race of the series at Brockville back in May and was hoping to improve on that going into round two. Entering the track, Power had to draw to determine her heat race starting position. Power drew a high number, and would have to start her qualifying heat from fifth place. By the end of the qualifier, she advanced to third place, locking in her position in the 40 lap feature. Jessica rolled off the starting grid from the 13th position and struggled for much of the race. She would finish with a 10th place finish, but they were certainly looking for more.
“It was a struggle tonight, but I think we found some things out, and hopefully we will be better from here on out”, says Power. “Our goals going into the year were top fen finishes, and we seem to be doing that, but we know we are much better then this. We will continue to work hard, and hopefully next week will be better”.
The next event on the weekend schedule was at Brockville Speedway on Saturday night. Jessica started the night with a second place finish in her preliminary qualifier, and started the 25 lap feature from outside of the front row. Jessica remained in second place throughout the race, following the leader’s every move, waiting to pounce on a mistake by the race leader, but it never happened. A second place finish would be the end result.
“We tried several times to get a run on the race leader”, but we just couldn’t pull it off”, says Power. “I was being patient, waiting for him to slip up, or do something, but he drover a great race, and we had to settle for second”.
This coming week, Power will be back at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night for a regular show, then on to Brockville Speedway for one of the biggest events of the 2012 season as Bob Fm and Coca Cola present Triple Double night. It will be double laps, double purse and double points for all classes.
